Hiking in Washington State – June 2018

Pictures are from a June 2018 hiking trip to explore the waterfalls of Washington State. We started in Portland and crossed into Washington on the Bridge of the Gods. After visiting Beacon Rock State Park, we drove north through Gifford Pinchot National Forest & Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest to Mount Rainier National Park. The day we arrived it was so cloudy/foggy we had to ask someone in the parking lot which direction we  needed to go to find the Paradise Inn; it was less than 100 feet away! We then continued north to Twin Falls Natural Area, Wallace Falls State Park, & Wenatchee National Forest before returning south. We visited 53 waterfalls! Some of the plants we saw are identical to those found here in the NC mountains; some are cousins, in the same genus. Pictures are arranged in the order described above. Plants that are non-native to North America are indicated by an asterisk (*) placed after the species name. Photography by Penny Longhurst. Click on any picture to zoom and enter the slide show.

Butterflies & Moths of the Carolinas

May the wings of the butterfly kiss the sun
And find your shoulder to light on,
To bring you luck, happiness and riches
Today, tomorrow and beyond.
~Irish blessing

Well, we could certainly use some of that! David Heavner has been photographing butterflies and moths for several years. Below are some pictures from his collection. Most were taken in Madison County, especially near Hot Springs. Click on any picture to zoom and enter the slide show.

Holiday Fest 2020

We couldn’t be together but we can still enjoy Ken’s “Blooms and Bloopers” slide shows from previous years (scroll to the bottom and be glad there were no incriminating pictures from this year), as well as see pictures from previous field trips (some never seen before) so we remember who we are (and were) and wintery pics. Happy Holidays everyone. Wishing you all a healthy & happy New Year. Hope to see you all then – sometime!

Ken’s “Bloopers” start with the 2013 movie, or you can choose a specific year to watch by clicking on the 1/6 bars at top right.

Flora of Henderson County Walkways – Non-native Trees & Shrubs

With loads of time on their hands, Ken and his co-leader, Annie, have been documenting the flora of Henderson County walkways. Their walkies have taken them to the Oklawaha Greenway, Fletcher Park, Park Ridge Nature Trail, & the Park at Flat Rock. Previous posts showed native flora in early- & late-summer, non-native flora, & native trees & shrubs. Here are the their pictures of non-native trees & shrubs.  Photography by Ken Borgfeldt.
